Covered three FOMC cycles as a reporter. The "just let the market set rates" version of this argument sounds great until you remember what discretion-free monetary policy did in 1929 and 2008. Someone has to be able to move fast.

Covered the run-up to IRCA in '86. Enforcement-only bills without an accompanying legalization pathway have failed to actually reduce unauthorized immigration every single time we've tried it since. History on this one is pretty clear.
Interviewed a family a few years back whose missing kid was found within hours because a transit camera flagged a match. Not saying the concerns aren't real, just that "no place at all" is a hard line to hold once you've seen it work.
